Prairie Flower Children’s Center is seeking a diligent, compassionate part-time afterschool teacher with a passion for nature and the outdoors to help with our afterschool nature play program, Poemtree, beginning mid-August and continuing through the 2021-2022 school year. Our location in Ames, Iowa, is ideal for early-childhood movement and connection to nature.
For 22 years, Prairie Flower Children’s Center has been connecting children to nature and its rhythms,, and will resume serving children from Ames and surrounding communities in September 2021 after closing for the 2020 school year due to the pandemic. Our school is adjacent to Inis Grove park in north Ames, and features a beautiful cabin in the woods with 14 wooded acres of streams, ravines and riverbanks to explore nearby.
Poemtree is an outdoor afterschool club for children that takes place Wednesday afternoons for children 5 to 12 years old, known as Woods Wednesday, and Friday afternoons for 11- to 18-year-olds, known as Forest Fridays. Our main activity is free play and exploration in the woods, but on any given day you will find Poemtree children learning about woods and garden care, hiking, foraging, woodworking, whittling, building fires, climbing trees, playing music, singing, hearing nature stories (and making up our own), making maps, building forts and doing other outdoor projects.
The winter months find us doing more indoor projects, like baking and playing board games, and doing indoor craft and handwork projects such as weaving, knitting, sewing and painting, following the impulses and interests of the children.
Under the direction of the center director, the afterschool teacher will facilitate both Poemtree sessions, creating a nurturing and engaging environment for students and families and ensuring all students' needs are met during the program.
Position Details: The afterschool teacher will work for four hours on Wednesdays, from 2-6 p.m., and possibly Fridays from 3-5:45 p.m., pending sufficient student enrollment. Occasionally, we have teacher meetings or prep work that needs to be done. This position runs for the 2021-2022 school year and is paid on an hourly basis at $12 per hour.

We seek someone who practices firm but kind boundary-setting, enjoys being with children and has interest or skill in any of the following: board games, outdoor group games, wildcrafting, foraging, nature, outdoor safety, cooking with children, handwork and crafting.
The individual also must have the ability to lift at least 50 pounds and to hike nearby rugged terrain; the ability to be outdoors daily during all seasons (sun, rain, snow, cold down to 15 degrees); and excellent communication skills during frequent interactions with other teachers.
The ideal candidate would be available to work Wednesdays (and possibly Fridays) each week, could commit to the position for the entire school year and would have an interest in furthering his or her knowledge of outdoor education.
