Poemtree Afterschool Nature Club for Ages 5-12

Poemtree Afterschool Nature Club is an outdoor program inspired by forest schools for children and pre-teens between the ages of 5 and 12, led by experienced outdoor educators. This creative, play-based (mostly) program offers children the gift of free time to play, explore their own imaginations and build creative outdoor skills in the woods.

We offer sessions on Wednesdays and Fridays each week, with a choice of attending full-time (each week) or half-time (alternating weeks).

Extend Your Day With "Bridge to Woods Wednesdays": In 2021, we launched Bridge to Woods Wednesdays to help fill the gap between the morning and afternoon programs. This program fits in between the end of morning preschool and the start of Poemtree, and offer families whose children are age-eligible one full day of Prairie Flower programming.

What Goes on During Poemtree?
Our main activity is free play in nearby woods. However, on any given day at Poemtree Nature Club, you may find your child:

  • learning woods and garden care
  • trading jokes, poems and riddles
  • playing, climbing and hiking
  • keeping a nature journal or drawing
  • playing classic youth games tag and capture the flag
  • learning knot-tying, foraging, wood-working, whittling, building fires or tree and plant identification.
  • playing music
  • hearing nature stories and writing their own
  • making maps
  • building forts, a dam in the creek or a rock museum
  • relaxing in a hammock
  • and all manner of other outdoor projects

During the winter months when days are shorter, we are at times forced indoors, where our main activities are playing board games, cooking, making art and other forms of crafting and handwork (like weaving, knitting, sewing, and painting).

As a child-led center, we follow the impulses and interests of the children. Seasonally, we explore different themes or skills.
