Volunteer needs

We welcome volunteers who wish to support us in our mission and in carrying out our programs. Whether you are a high school student, retired person, or anywhere in between, and want to use your time to support a local non-profit and better the community, we appreciate your support!

One of the best ways to support us as a volunteer is through serving on our board of directors.

For summer 2025, we are seeking teen volunteers who would like to get some experience leading and planning activities for school-age kids as part of our summer camp program. They would work under the supervision of our paid camp staff. This is a great way to get leadership experience as part of a short-term, flexible role.

We are seeking substitute teachers, who can occasionally sub if the lead or assistant teachers are unable to work (may be planned in advance, or may be last-minute). You must be able to pass a background check, have childcare or teaching experience, and be comfortable being outside in all weather. We would arrange for substitutes to obtain the necessary trainings required by DHS. Substitutes would also receive a list of duties, a few short articles on our educational philosophy to read, and verbal instructions from the lead teacher. Substitute teachers do receive an hourly wage.

Other lower-commitment options for the school year include:
  • Helping staff booths (and helping facilitate free nature-based kid's activities) for us, at events like the Ames Main Street Farmer's Market, EcoFair, and others.
  • Helping do landscaping for our nature playscape
  • Helping organize our indoor storage space
  • Helping volunteer for us at Rummage Rampage each summer
  • Helping sew items for the classroom (mat sheets, doll clothes, napkins etc) or crafting birthday celebration supplies (pockets, crowns etc)

Please contact [email protected] to discuss your volunteering interests!
