 School-Age Summer Camp - Summer 2025

Prairie Flower's mission for over 25 years has been to provide learning experiences that strengthen connections to the natural world and nurture children's innate capacities for imagination and wonder. What makes us unique is our nature school educational philosophy, which means we spend most of the day outdoors during warm seasons (in all weather, including rain!).

We also emphasize unhurried daily rhythms and unstructured, child-led play time -- and we practice supervised "risky play" by climbing and exploring, which is important for children's development in many ways.

About Our Summer Camps
Our summer programming draws on similar learning approaches while giving your children a chance to engage in fun themed activities.

Weekly camps will be capped to a small group (up to 17 kids max), and have a high staff-to-student ratio (three adults to 17 kids). Children will enjoy sunshine and fresh air while observing the beauty and wonder of nature, maybe getting a little dirty – and above all, getting to enjoy being kids.

  • 9 a.m.-Noon: Themed activities, related to the week's camp theme. These activities may happen on or offsite based on the activities for the day. A weekly message about plans will be sent at the beginning of each camp week.

  • Noon-12:45 p.m.: Lunch and quiet reading. This may happen on- or offsite based on the day's activities. Children need a rest in the middle of the day to relax, rehydrate and rest their muscles. After the children are done with lunch, we will read in the shade and rest for a short time.

  • 12:45 p.m.-3 p.m.: Continuation of themed activities on- or offsite based on the day's activities. Children will take part in a variety of activities around town and in the nearby woods. We will walk and use CyRide as transportation methods. Children will walk to Furman Aquatic Center each Thursday from 1-4 p.m.

  • 3-5:30 p.m.: Pick-up window. Children will arrive back onsite by 3 p.m. to join the preschoolers and afternoon staff. All children will be onsite at the playscape during this time. Activities will be less structured and similar to Prairie Flower's PoemTree after-school program, which emphasizes play-based, unhurried free time for kids to explore their own imaginations. Note: School-age summer camp children will arrive back onsite around 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Note: The main outdoor spaces used will include Brookside Park, Ames High Prairie, and Prairie Flower's nature playscape, as well as field trips to Moore Memorial Park, Inis Grove Park, and other parks along CyRide routes.
